A struggle we hear frequently from leaders today is how to gain the loyalty and respect of their employees. The most common answer is often easy and shortsighted: using fear. While that may work for a time, in the long term it often ends up with you isolating yourself from your team, as well as demotivating people and dismantling what you’re trying to build. Here’s an example you might not expect.

Imagine you are one of thousands in an army that is encamped outside in the country in the dead of winter. You’re cold, hungry, beyond tired, and disease is taking the lives of many of your friends. Your leader, instead of retreating to comfort, shares your burdens, staying with you during harsh conditions. He frequently stops by to hear how you’re doing, asks what you need, and figures out how to get the supplies needed so you and your team can build your own huts. He tells you that you are part of a group of people in charge of their own destiny and that your skills and talents matter. Over time, you begin to see that he isn’t just saying things to get you to do what you need to do, but he means what he says. You feel heard, and inspired to go beyond what you thought you could do.

That leader was the “Father of the Nation,” George Washington, and he shared the above quote with his troops at Valley Forge. His willingness to endure the same suffering as his men fostered deep loyalty and respect. In addition to leading by example, he made tough but wise decisions that helped solidify the trust and admiration of his subordinates, ensuring their commitment to the cause.

Respect is the second of five values to keep in mind when you’re working to build trust within your organization. “TRUST” Is an easy acronym to remember:

  • Transparency
  • Respect
  • Understanding
  • Support
  • Teamwork

Next, you’ll see how leaders who are understanding are more likely to be trusted by their team, creating a more positive and productive work environment.
